DEEP DIVE PROJECT

During my first semester in the Innovation Academy, my cohort was challenged to take on the Deep Dive Project. During this project, we were given the chance to deeply investigate issues we’re interested in, not only through our laptops but also in the real world through different field trips. We split our small class into three different groups and gave the work our all. During this time we learned how to take professional photographs and took pictures of our process in the project. When we finished, we created our own exhibition at school with all of our photographs.

The following text is the speech I and my group gave explaining our work at the exhibition:

Hello, we are Arantxa, Sofia, and Nicole. Over the past three months, we’ve been investigating the unreported cases of gender-based violence. We began researching femicide, an issue that is seen more and more in Peru. The problem with femicide was that it is a huge issue, and coming up with an impactful solution would be difficult, so we decided to narrow it down to the unreported cases of gender-based violence.

Our focus on this still broad issue began focusing more and more as we participated in different forms of field research. Our most important research trip bring that to the Comisaria de Miraflores. Upon entering the police station, the problem seemed obvious, how could Peruvian officers expect women to come forward with such intimate, and private cases in an environment completely dominated by men. As part of our research, we contacted the Ministry of Women and they were able to give us in-depth answers to our questions about the government's objectives, their plans, statistics and even their own opinion on this issue. We realized the importance of reaching out to authorities because, without them, our research would’ve been online via a computer screen.

After the police station, and discussing with the ministry, the message that we kept on getting was how impactful and empowering a woman can be, and sometimes because of the culture and environment we live in people can forget that. And for this reason, precisely we decided to go around Lima and capture women, showing us their most empowering expression. We captured women of all ages, colors, ethnicities, and that is what we bring to you today. I hope you all enjoy the message we convey through photography and feel empowered to break THE FRAME. Thank you!
