Mission Project

Journaling for 100 days and writing poems

The mission project is about empowering our students to pursue their passion for learning,
lead lives of integrity and create socially responsible solutions. For my mission project, I chose to journal for 100 days straight to work with being more self-aware and improve my mental health. Every day I wrote about my day in a page and added a word to describe what I was feeling on the cover of my journal. My goal in this was to improve my writing, learn new things about myself through reflection and create something cool.

After finishing my journal I was left with the desire to do more. My peers have done poetry books for their independent projects before (I'm in IA) and I’d decided I’d join the poetry train. I have no idea how to write poems so I’m excited to get to research more about how to actually do that.

MY REFLECTION

MY PROCESS, LEARNING AND TAKEOUTS

Writing to me has become much more than just words on a page. I came into this project thinking I’d be able to finish it quickly over the summer then forget about it. Letting go of my journal and accepting that I had finished was hard, especially after having had made it part of my everyday routine for 100 days. My passion for writing had grown to where it didn’t feel like I was writing for a task it became something I had fun doing. Finishing the 100th day of journaling was very rewarding, I thought getting to that point would’ve been a struggle and I was happy that it became something that made me smile. It was a weird type of feeling though. I was happy to have finished the journal but I felt this pain in my chest knowing it was time to let go of journaling. It was a dreadful feeling, similar to the one you get after finishing a really good series you’ve been binge watching. The week after I finished writing was beyond horrifying. I found myself brainstorming about cool things I could write about while I stared out my car window at the sky then remembered there were no more pages left in my journal for me to write about it. This project turned writing to something I do in my free time rather than just for school. There’s a strange but nice feeling of being vulnerable when writing. Knowing that any day someone could pick up the paper I’m writing on and read the words I put on it. That’s what gives writing the edge I fell in love with.

FDR MISSION

Our mission is to empower our students to pursue their passion for learning,

lead lives of integrity and create socially responsible solutions.

This project has allowed me to pursue my passion for writing because I'd never had the time or encouragement to begin a journal and the mission project was a good excuse to do this. I've also learned to reflect on everything I do on a daily basis through writing which will help me live a life of integrity. The journal has also helped me to be responsible by writing and analyzing everything in my life and from that making good desicions
